1. Create a Wedding Budget

When my clients first come to me, we talk about and create their budget. It’s not always fun or easy to talk numbers, but it is so important. One of the easiest ways to feel less stressed about your wedding is to have a budget because it’s essentially your plan for the wedding, and you’ll have a better idea of how much to spend on certain vendors. I always tell my clients that a wedding is like a house: you can’t start looking until you know your budget! Once we know their wedding budget, we will work with them on what their priorities are for their wedding. For some people, it’s making sure they have a great photographer or a band or the perfect flowers. These will be the vendors we focus on, and then create a budget with that in mind.

2. Break down your engagement month-to-month

We do this for all of our clients! Every month, we list the tasks that need to get done, and check them off once they have been completed. We highly suggest you do this, even if you’re not working with a planner! It’s easy to get stressed if you don’t know when to do certain tasks, but if you lay them out, you can easily see the progress you’re making, and what you need to focus on next.

3. Hire vendors you like and trust

This is so important. You will work with some of your vendors more than a year, so it’s really important that you like and trust these people! You want to surround yourself with people throughout your engagement process who you feel like are experts in their field and make you feel calm and excited about your wedding! On your wedding day, there are so many moving parts, so you need people who will make you smile, relax and reassure you that everything is going to be wonderful.

4. Take the Week Off

Don’t plan on doing any major to-do list items the week of your wedding. The week of your wedding is chaotic enough. Don’t plan on doing any major to-do list items that week. I always suggest that anything that needs to get done should be done at least two weeks before the wedding. You’ll have family and friends coming into town, spa appointments, dinners and rehearsals; the last thing you want that week is to be running around finalizing little items. Give yourself at least that week to soak it all in!

5. Be a guest at your own wedding

If you’re not working with a wedding planner for your whole wedding, I highly suggest at least hiring a weekend coordinator to finalize all the logistics, and be with you on the wedding day. You both have spent so much time, energy and money on the wedding, you should truly be able to relax, smile and be a guest at your own wedding. A coordinator can do all those things on your to do list, and think of all the last minute details that might not have even crossed your mind!
